I had another spot on my skin removed this week. Yep, I’m bringing up once again the importance of skincare for those of us that are in the sun a lot. Sun care is so vital that your life could actually depend on it.
For those that follow me on Instagram, you probably saw my story this week of me sitting in the doctor’s office waiting for them to come in and remove a few spots from my chest and my abdomen.
I am now sitting here writing this to you, to once again beg you to get out of the tanning bed and protect yourself in the sunlight.
Believe me when I say that I understand completely wanting to be tan. I get it. I really do. I’m Casper’s cousin on my best day.
On the flip side of my ghostly appearance, I have darker skinned ancestors that have made it extremely easy for me to get a tan. When I was younger I thought it was awesome how I could go from being so pale that you would need eye protection to an awesome coppery/reddish tan that made people jealous.
As any good teenager does, I went against my parent’s wishes of me protecting myself in the sun and staying out of the tanning bed. I would spend hours outside during the summer using tanning oils, minimal sunscreen PLUS spending time in a tanning bed. To say that I had an unhealthy relationship with the sun is an understatement.
But I had a tan that made people jealous that’s what mattered, right?
That is until I noticed a mole on my stomach a few years ago that was growing and getting darker. I made an appointment with my doctor not thinking anything would come of it. However, one of the spots that was removed did raise a red flag. Everything is all good now but to say that I was freaked out is an understatement.
Fast forward to this week where I’m once again sitting in a doctor’s office after a check-up waiting to have 2 more spots removed. This time I’m in a different place in my life and I realize even more just how important it is to stay out of the tanning bed and how I must tell you girls how I care for my skin now so that way maybe you will take my lead and do the same.
Even though I got out of the tanning bed four years ago, I’m still paying for it today with removals of spots and waiting on test results.
Hear what I’m actually saying
Am I saying we shouldn’t ever go outside and live inside with the shades drawn? Of course not. What I am saying is that sun care and wearing sunscreen is so incredibly important, it ranks right up there with your diet and your workouts.
As outdoor runners we get a lot of sun exposure and in some tender places. This is because we wear minimal clothing because once you start dripping sweat, the last thing we want to have is clothing sticking to our skin.
Before you head out for your run, spray or rub on some sunscreen. Yes, even in the winter time, wear your sunscreen on your exposed skin while you’re running. Or anytime you’re going to be in the sun, really.
When you choose your sunscreen
Be sure to check the ingredients. Just like you check the ingredients in your foods by reading the label, you should check your suncreen to make sure that they are free of chemicals such as Paraben and PABA.
It’s also a really good idea for your sunscreen to be oil free so that it doesn’t clog up your skin.

The second thing I recommend
Is that you grab a good hat. I know for me, the last thing I want to wear when I run is a hat that is going to hold all of the heat in my head and make me even more hot than I already him.

So, do we pull the shades shut and hide?
I know you’ve heard it all before of “wear your sunscreen!” or “get out of the tanning bed!” or “stay out of the sun!”
While I agree on two of the three, I don’t agree on the third. While I am no scientist, I firmly believe that some safe and protected time in the sun is actually really good for us.
I know for me, when I go running outside, I love it so much more than the treadmill. While the treadmill has its time and place, you simply can’t beat an outdoor run.
The sun provides us with Vitamin D which is vital to our health and well being. In fact, a bit of time in the sun helps boost my spirits, especially if I’ve been indoors writing all day or doing client follow up!
One more thing and I’ll close this out; if you hear nothing else in this post, hear this. Please take care of yourself and your skin. I understand wanting to be tan, but there are ways to do it without putting yourself and your skin in harms way.
Don’t continue to put yourself in a situation where the chances of you having to sit in a doctor’s office looking at the tools to remove spots from your body increase. It’s not a good feeling being in that position and waiting on test results.
