I am a self-proclaimed fraidy cat. Oh yeah, girl. If you looked up fraidy cat in the dictionary, you would probably see my face.
Okay maybe not.
But if you need help coming up with things to worry about, I’m there for ya. I’m all over it. Worried that you’re going to fall down the stairs? I could name all of the ways that you could possibly fall. Worried about being abducted by aliens? Okay… Too far.
However, follow the bouncing ball.
Let’s go for an example. I know you’ll find this shocking[oh hello, sarcasm], but I absolutely love trying new exercises. Not only do I like trying new exercises, I like making up new exercises and testing them out to see if they work.
Now, I may love doing this, but when I am in the gym, if it’s crowded and I’m trying a new thing or testing out a new exercise, I get a little bit nervous about if I were to end up failing the exercise.
The last thing I want is to end up as a viral video of what not to do in the gym. I’m a trainer a coach for crying out loud! See? Fear.
While that maybe a very silly example and I’ve almost gotten over that small fear, there are still plenty of things that I am afraid of!
These three steps are what I use to overcome each of my fears whether big or small.
1. Overcoming Your Fears Tip #1- Acknowledging Your Fear
For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with fear and with being afraid of things. There were many things that I was afraid of, but to be honest, at the very top of that list was the fear of failure. Fear of failing what exactly? Well, it never quite looked the same and I had quite a few girlfriends that went through that same thing.
To be quite frank, a lot of the times that I was afraid of failing, I was being utterly ridiculous. On the other hand, there were other times that it was quite legitimate.
When you actually acknowledge that you have a fear and you can name that fear out loud, that is truly the first step to overcoming that fear. Because when you know what you’re afraid of, and you know that you struggle with it, you can establish steps to overcoming it and start putting that plan into action.
A lot of people have a hard time acknowledging their fears because they are afraid that fear will make them look weak. I can guarantee you that you do not look weak.
Do you think that Lady Gaga goes out on stage with no fear? No! She herself has said she’s always terrified before she goes out!
But how does she do it? This leads me to my next point.
2. Overcoming Your Fears Tip #2 – Finding Your Why to Face Your Fears
I can face my fears every single day because I know my “why”. My why is my family and my why is you. Yes, you. So, back to my example of the gym and trying new exercises, when I’m afraid of someone videoing or thinking I look ridiculous, I remember why I’m doing what I’m doing.
I remember that finding new exercises can really help you and help you achieve your fitness goals.
Someone once said, courage isn’t the absence of fear, but it’s the realization that something else is more important than fear. Your “why” is what is more important than your fear.
Perhaps your why is a dream job that you have. Your dream job of being a known interior designer (as an example) could be your why. You have to be willing to step of your comfort boat and face your fear of failure head on to take your health back to be able to go after that dream job.
The Lady Gaga example I brought up: her why is her fans, she knows that those people came to see her. She faces her fears and steps out there on stage and rocks a show.
If you’re still struggling with being able to face your fears, really evaluate your “why”. Because if thinking about your why doesn’t help you face your fears, then it may not actually be your why. Really dig deep on this, sister.
Your why? Find it. Then and only then should you move onto step 3.
You can use this free printable that I have created to help you find your why, your what, and your how. It says a one page checklist to schedule your workouts, but part of that checklist is working out your why!
3. Overcoming Your Fears Tip #3 – Face Everything and Rise
It’s time to face your fears, rise to the occasion and go out and get what you want. Your dream job? It needs a healthy and strong girl to tackle it.
This is probably the hardest step of all of them. I get it! Because it’s one thing to acknowledge your fear and to know your why… But the step of actually stepping out in faith and facing your fears is a different story.
However, you are SO strong. You are beyond capable of doing this. Overcoming this fear is something that you have to do to be able to meet your goals and catch your dreams.
While you’re in this process of taking charge of your life again, you’ll learn a bit of self-love and realize that you deserve your self-love.
I Know This Can be Hard
Sis, I know that overcoming fears is not as simple as reading a pithy blog post and all of the sudden your fears disappear.
It just doesn’t work that way, does it? How simple life would be then, right?
This post was absolutely not meant to minimize your fears at all. Fear can be paralyzing if we allow it to be. Women I have met all over struggle with fear. It’s part of life and we have to know how to overcome it and how to live our lives to the fullest.
These three steps are legitimate actions that you can take right this very second and start taking your life back.
You’re smarter than you realize, stronger than you know, and loved more than you can ever imagine.
Stand on your feet and move forward.
You can do this.
