I’m starting a new trend for 2018 and it’s because I’m tired of a few things. Y’all are about to see me get on my soap box so just buckle up because it’s about to get salty. I think I’m too old to say that, but oh well, I’m still in my 20’s… for now.
Each year I have watched people get really excited about a “new year new me”. They grab a membership at the gym and set out on a journey only to realize that running on a treadmill or hopping on an elliptical for an hour is super boring. And it totally is! I hate the treadmill – yes, the running coach just admitted her hate for the treadmill. It’s because you don’t feel like you’re going anywhere! You’re watching a clock and if anybody thinks that a minute is fast, you’ve never been on one of these two machines from Hades. Or in a plank. But I digress… which I tend to do on my soap box.
Why New Year’s resolutions tend to not work
According to Business Insider – 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February That’s an insane number! We all know the joke right? “If you think the gym is too full just wait until February”. There’s actually some truism to that joke. So let’s talk about it; why is this number so big? Well, everyone has their opinions on why that number is so large, but I have my own so here we go.
What’s a girl to do?
Take charge just like any other situation! You decide what YOU want to accomplish this year and get after it. Maybe you’re looking at the New Year and you’ve got goals of losing x amount of pounds, or you’re wanting to gain strength and switch up your lifting regimen, or you are wanting to run a sub 2 hour half marathon. But how to achieve those goals? I’m about to give you 3 tips to keeping your goals for the new year.
Tip 1 – Make your Goals SMART
Here’s what I mean, SMART is an acronym meaning Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time Bound. Stick with me here because this is so important! Let’s say that ultimately you would like to lose weight working towards a healthier lifestyle and you start the year with amazing gumption and you’re going to take on the world. Which is awesome, but if you haven’t made them SMART, then you will likely get discouraged very quickly and hence give up which gives u the 80% number that you see above. Here’s an example of a SMART goal for weight loss: “I would like to lose 15 pounds by April 15”. You can see this goal is specific, it’s measurable (losing 15 lb), it’s attainable, it’s relevant, and it’s time bound (April 15).

Tip 2 – Find an Accountability Partner
This one is super important! If you’ve been around my blog any length of time or follow me on Social Media, you will know how passionate about this one I am. Keep in mind that when you’re looking for an accountability partner, they don’t have to have the exact same goal(s) that you do, but they do need to be at least walking in the same direction. Here’s what I mean! You and your friend want to be accountability partners, and one of you would like to lose x amount of pounds while the other would like to run a sub 2 hour half marathon.
I have one! Two in fact, one that is older and has been in the fitness industry for 20+ years and one that is my age and one of my dear friends. We CrossFit together but she doesn’t run. So as you can see, you can still be accountability partners while working towards your separate goals together! Read those two other posts for much more detail 🙂
Tip 3 – Hire Someone to Help you Achieve your Goals
Hiring a trained coach and trainer can help you reach your goals and maintain your goals. I’ve seen and helped many girls create these amazing goals and achieve them.
I am a firm believer that being healthy is not a fad diet, or only eating grilled chicken and kale every meal. It’s all about balance and learning to make great decisions in everyday life. It truly is a lifestyle and once you know how to make those good decisions, it will become like second nature and you will continue to see positive changes in your body.

Bonus Tip- Be You
I am a firm believer in being comfortable in your own skin, but also always on the lookout of how we can better ourselves. If you’re ready to make a change and still be you but an improved you, then let’s get crackin, sister. Self improvement and the journey of healthy living is such a beautiful path but it can be messy. Always remember to not be too hard on yourself. Body Shaming is never okay and that includes body shaming yourself. I have been body shamed myself, don’t allow yourself to fall into that trap!
