“I can’t eat that I’m on a diet.” That is literally the quickest way to lose friends. Just kidding! But seriously, let’s talk about this. How many times have we tried the latest “lose 20 pounds fast by drinking this concoction of unicorn hair, olive oil, and cayenne pepper.” When you click the link, the secret ingredient of unicorn hair is like $12,384.65. It’s like what the heck?
For the love of dumbbells, let’s take a minute and gather our thoughts here while I let you in on a secret. The quickest way to lose weight is…. Real food and exercise.
That secret is what I tell all of my athletes that are looking to lose weight and I’ll tell you the same thing, sis. Those 10 pounds that you want to lose aren’t going to go away and stay away unless you learn how to eat real food and stick to eating real food.
It’s the truth and here’s another secret. Eating real food does NOT have to be boring, but I digress. Let’s stay focused here.
I like to think of Whole30 as a gateway to a healthy lifestyle. Here’s what I mean- you’re wanting to get back on track in a healthy lifestyle and you’re really not sure where to start. You know that you want to eat real food and stay healthy but you’re a working gal and 1. don’t have time to cook every single night and 2. can’t afford the $12K unicorn hair. But seriously, though, who could??
Enter Whole30. Whole30 is the perfect gateway into learning to eat real food and it will also help you figure out what foods might be giving you fits that you never realized were happening.
(Remember, if you have specific health needs that require certain foods, talk to your doc before changing your food regimen!)
Whole30 teaches you what to eat, how to eat it, and then send you on your merry little way to continue eating real food and living your healthy life knowing what foods give you issues and what ones don’t.
But, what the heck is Whole30?
Allow me to introduce you to, Jillian. She is a normal gal doing the daily grind and does CrossFit while eating true Paleo 99% of the time. She is not some high performance elite athlete who gets paid lots of money to stay fit or play a sport. Jillian is a real person and her interview will shed some light for you on Whole30, and why it’s different than other jump start diets.
What is your name?
When did you complete Whole30? Have you done it more than once?
I completed Whole30 around mid-February 2018. This was the first time I have ever done it.
What is Whole30?
Whole30 is a 30 day process where you eliminate certain foods and detoxing your body from them, then slowly you will add things such as; dairy, sugar and grains back in and see how your body reacts to the food. It allows you to really identify how your body is breaking down foods or not breaking down foods and the side effects that come when you eat a lot of these toxic things.
Do you believe that this is a sustainable way to eat on a regular basis?
Not at all, Whole30 is a wonderful tool to use to detox your body and identify foods and what they do to your body. However, Whole30 is extreme and I only recommend doing the full process about twice a year.
What made you decide to do Whole30?
My box (CrossFit Gym) was doing Whole30 as a group to really try and teach all of us to pay attention to our nutrition and what we are eating. Most of us would have complaints about not recovering well from a workout or being tired, etc. so our entire gym did Whole30 and spent that whole month being coached and really identifying the foods that were affecting our bodies in negative ways.
What is the hardest thing about Whole30?
SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR!!! Holy cow, I had NO idea how many foods I ate that had sugar in them. And consumers are tricky. Sugar has about 150 (other) names so just because it doesn’t say sugar on the ingredient list doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have sugar in it. For me this was a huge deal. Really paying attention to the active ingredient lists.
What is the easiest thing?
The easiest thing about Whole30 was after the first couple weeks you have identified where to shop and not to shop. Know your eating out options, and become more in a routine of foods that are complainant and foods that aren’t. Once you understand this, life gets easier.
Did you have specific goals you wanted to meet when doing Whole30?
I wanted to feel more energized and eat more wholesome foods. For me I could care less about the scale I just wanted to detox from sugar and feel good again.
What were your results from eating Whole30?
I had so much energy. It was amazing! I went to bed every night and never felt bloated. I could attack my workouts and knew how to fuel my body afterwards and I just had a much better understanding of how my body dealt with particular foods.
The Whole30 Program is a New York Times Best Selling Book, why do you think that is?
I believe because Whole30 is just raw, it takes hard work and dedication but the book gives you all the tools you need to succeed at this journey.
According to the Whole30 Website, you cannot eat a lot of things that are in American’s daily diet. How difficult do you think this program is for the average person?
I’ll be honest the process will be hard for the average person, because most American’s consume junk and they are fine with that. They don’t fully understand that the things they put in their mouths are affecting their bodies in so many different ways. It’s difficult, yes, but absolutely doable.
What’s your opinion on Whole30 as a diet for high performance athletes?
I don’t think Whole30 is a good diet to maintain for high performance athletes just because we need more. Whole30 is wonderful but if you are doing CrossFit type training multiple days a week I would look more into a Paleo option for a long term diet.
Would you say that Whole30 is a fad diet? Why or Why not?
I suppose you could say Whole30 is a “fad diet” in the aspect that it’s not intended to be done long term. As far as the results being a fad thing, that’s completely untrue. You get out of Whole30 what you put into it. It’s a wonderful tool and I think most people would benefit from doing Whole30.
There are a lot of recipes out there that are Whole30 (i.e. Whole30 muffins, etc.), in your opinion, is this still considered Whole30 or is it just being used as a “buzz word”?
So, with Whole30 you are not supposed to “reinvent” a food such as Whole30 cookies or muffins just for the simple fact that you are detoxing your body from sugar and grains so even though you may change the ingredients and use things that are compliant you don’t want to throw your body off and start having old cravings come back. It’s better to just stay away from it all.
What would you say to someone that is considering doing Whole30?
I say go for it! You will learn so much about food and nutrition, and specifically identifying how those foods are affecting your day to day

Here is the basic information that I want you to get out of this entire post; Whole 30 is hard but it is doable. The entire point is to take things out of your diet that have been shown in studies to cause issues and then see how adding those things back into our diet makes us feel.
