While I am actually quite pitiful at making friends because I am the most awkward person alive- I mean, have you seen my Instagram Selfies?- I fully believe in the power of having a fitness accountability partner.
Accountability sounds like such a scary word, doesn’t it? It kind of sounds like some crazy commitment that you’re unsure you’d ever be able to hold up your end of the bargain. Accountability however doesn’t have to be scary, it can actually be a very freeing thing. Plus it almost gives you more of a purpose. Plus, I firmly believe that it will help you reach your goals much quicker than if you didn’t have one!
Let’s start with what I don’t mean by a fitness accountability partner; I don’t mean a gym buddy.
While gym and/or run buddies are great, trying to sync on a schedule that you always go to the gym together, well, that’s pretty much impossible. Even spouses aren’t on the same schedule, so trying to get on the same schedule as someone else, in my opinion, sets you up for failure.
What I DO mean by fitness accountability partner is just that. They are your partner in crime, they know your workout schedule and you know theirs. You ask each other the hard questions “Did you workout this morning?” or…. “What’d you eat for breakfast?” things like that. Fitness accountability partners share in the victories as well as the failures. Yes, there is a such thing as failure, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with failure. Failure means that you’re trying.
One thing to keep clear! It doesn’t have to be a person the same sex as you. Here’s what I mean; my husband David and I help keep each other accountable. In fact, having a dude be one of my accountability partners has really pushed me because, he’s stronger, quicker, and he knows my limits. It makes me better all the way around.
Grab your best friend whomever it is and get to it! Take it from the ultimate gym loner: fitness accountability partners are a must.
Here are the 3 reasons everyone needs a fitness accountability partner:
Helps Avoid Burnout
No matter how cool we are or how “fitnessy” we think we are, burn out is a REAL struggle. Often times I have found that my accountability partner has seen my burn out coming even before I do. She will say something to the affect of “let’s switch some things up” or “what kind of cross training have you thought about?” (That last one was an actual conversation that was had about 3 months ago ~~> enter Crossfit). I’m a runner at heart and always will be. I have also now found a great love for the world of Crossfit, which has turned out to be a great cross train (imagine that) for me.
I am now working on a workout schedule that will help avoid burn out with my routine that is a mix of running and gym time. It’s all because my fitness accountability partner took the time to say, “Hey, let’s think outside the box here.”
I really can’t be more clear. Burnout is a very real thing and should be avoided at all costs. I had a burnout last fall where I quit running for awhile and I am just now starting to build miles back up. It was a huge blow to my training and to be honest, I’m really disappointed it happened.
That’s the other thing, for the accountability to work, you have to actually listen to your partner. My partner saw it coming, but I didn’t listen. Just keeping it real with you!
Keeps Exhaustion at Bay
For me, when I have a goal in mind, I plow ahead to reach that goal at all costs. I put my head down and I work. This can be a great thing, but it can also be a very bad thing. There is a very fine line between burn out (point one) and exhaustion. Burn out is when you’re tired of WHAT you’re doing and exhaustion is when you’re just plain tired. When I say tired I mean that feeling you need to sleep for 3 weeks.
This is where knowing your body comes in and for your partner to know how you operate as a person. You and your accountability partner need to be able to know where a good workout will help with your tiredness and the flip side of that, where your body is exhausted and needs the rest day. Your rest days are vital to reaching your goals. Your body must have time to repair and build itself back up.
Nobody is Perfect – Hence the Reason for Your Partner
I know that’s shocking that nobody is perfect. It’s so true though! I pride myself on planning things out and having a schedule of workouts and meals and blah blah blah…. But the truth is, sometimes those schedules don’t work out. I have a one year old and he takes up a lot of time! Sometimes things just happen.
On the flip side, sometimes I simply do not want to do certain things. You may simply not want to go to the gym, or go for a run. You’d rather sit on the couch and eat ice cream, who doesn’t though amirite? But it’s been four days since you’ve worked out and you’ve definitely got your rest days covered. That’s where your fitness accountability partner comes in. They get your hiney off the couch and out the door to get some exercise in.
Long story short, find a friend. Even if you are a loner and you don’t want somebody up in your business. My guess is that you have someone in your life that even if they’re not doing the same type of workouts or not eating the same diet you are, they’d love to have someone help keep them accountable too.
Who knows? The loner might even become the ultimate duo.
