I'll be honest. This wasn't what I intended to write about next, nor did I intend to write about it today or maybe even at all. This isn't like my normal posts of 5 Brilliant Weight Loss Tricks or The Lazy Girl’s Guide to a Flat Tummy. This is a fairly raw and real post about friendship. However, anybody who has been around my blog for more than 30 seconds know how blunt and honest I am and I mean it from love. My heart for you, my readers, and women in general, helping them live the best life possible is something that keeps me up at night. Case and point? Everyone in my house is in bed while I write this.
Friendship is absolutely essential to a healthy and full life. I'm not talking 100 pennies worth of friendships, I'm talking like 4 quarters worth of friendships. You follow me? (I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies).
What brought this on? Story first, then the moral of said story
If you guys follow me on Instagram you will know one of my dearest friends (because I tag her often). What you probably don't know is that she is too smart for her own good. Smart like, sometimes she tells me what she's doing for her doctorate that she has gone back to school for and I literally have no idea what she's saying. However, as any fantastic friend does, I smile and nod and encourage her on. Because, even though I don't know what she's saying, I want to hear what she has to say.
I've known for quite sometime that she is going to be moving away once she gets matched. I'm not talking like a few hours away; I'm talking a plane ride away. This is something I have really wrestled with because I'm so happy for her but at the same time, she is the second friend I have had in my lifetime that I have been this close to that has moved away.
Sob story? Nope- there's a point
This will be a shock for each of you I'm sure, but I have struggled with making friends my entire life. Growing up, I always got along better with dudes. Why? Because I like to get dirty, I play sports, and I have never sugar coated anything in my entire life. Girls tend to like things sugar coated and that just never set will with me. It's interesting to me how things circle back around to where my life mission is to reach women. Anyway! That's another blog post.
2 Quarters are worth more than 50 pennies
Literally? No. Figuratively? Yes, most definitely.
I have had two quarters in my life (not counting my husband), one I have known pretty much my entire life, she was a friend from when we were little and she didn't mind my tomboy ways and the weird and random things I said. She and I are just a few months apart in age and she got married the same hot summer I did 8 years (yikes!!) ago and has four children. She is a beautiful soul and a conservative God fearing woman. Just amazing all the way around. I helped her run her first 5k not that long ago and we're working on getting her baby bearing self back to “factory settings”. 🙂
My second quarter I met a few years ago and to be honest, I wasn't sure what she thought of me at first which is totally normal in my world. You'd be amazed at the looks I get. I came to find out though that people thought she was weird too and we totally bonded over that. We now Crossfit together and #liftallthethings. She is completely different from my first quarter but not any less special. She wears a lot of black, has a 1/4 sleeve tattoo, loves Jesus, and is wicked smart. I don't know what I'm going to do without her in my home town anymore. I take that back- yes, I do know, same thing I do with my first quarter, talk all the time and act like nothing happened.
My two quarters look completely different, but both need polishing.
How do I polish my quarters? By being there for them. Loving them and encouraging them. They each have different needs and I know how each of them require their encouragement. I also know their different humor styles and favorite foods.
They are amazing women and my hometown still has a hole from when quarter one left, and when quarter two leaves, it will feel empty for awhile but I know that my quarter polish works over social media and text messages just like in person.
My two quarters will still be polished and clean even though they're 100's of miles away.
Are you someone's quarter?
My mom always told me growing up that to get a friend you have to be a friend. I finally understand what she means by that. Believe it or not girls, we need friendships. Real, honest, and raw friendships. Yes, people can be crappy, yes they can be messy and they can be down right annoying. But you know what? They need a friend. Take their hand, reach out to her and be the friend you long to have.
Will you get hurt? There is a good possibility. Remember what I said about people being messy? It's because they are. Part of living a full and healthy life is having relationships and friendships. Not surface level, penny depth relationships. Real relationships you can be raw and honest with. Where you can be totally stupid with and if you need them at 11:00 at night because you're having a small meltdown you can call them.
To find that person, you have to be that person. I'm not saying to be unhealthily available to people, you're a smart girl, you know what I'm trying to say. If you have bad relationships in your life it's time to move on, there is someone who needs your friendship, just like you need theirs. Don't make excuses for why you can't be THAT friend.
Live with abandon. Love people. Be someone's quarter.
