Living in the Southern US I can literally SMELL spring. I love it. That being said, vacation season is right around the corner!
We all know those people.. You may even BE one of “those people”. Those people that when they're on vacation, they can't actually be on vacation. They are worried about where the gym is and getting up before dawn and sprinting 5 miles down the beach. Not to mention they won't eat carbs and they are holding their stomach just right in case someone photographs them like they've got their own paparazzi somehwere….. okay enough of that. 🙂
If you have been around my blog more than five minutes you know how I talk about balance and how you MUST have balance in order to lead a healthy lifestyle. You also know how hard I go in the gym and in my running routine and how I have my rest days planned in.
Let's be clear about a few things. I am NOT saying eat whatever you want then punish yourself in the gym. Nor am I saying that you should count every calorie that your body intakes. Balance, y'all.
Back on topic…
Vacation is a time where (surprise) you are away from everyday worries. This also means relaxing from being so hard on yourself! Let's be honest, no person is happy constantly worried about if they're going to hit their calorie burn goal for the day. Or worrying about if they have gotten their minimal 30 minutes a day of exercise. RELAX. You have paid to get away from everyday life and everyday worries, it's time to incorporate my four r's that are so important. Don't know what my four 4 R's are? You can read about them fully here and why I think they are as important as your workouts. I'll give you a hint, one of the R's is to relax, sister.
So, how can you tell if you are one of those annoying “fitness people”? Here are three ways you can tell, followed by my alter ego Gabby Abby summing it up for us in a nice little video.
Here we go. You might be an annoying fitness person if….
The First Question You Ask Is”Does the hotel/condo/resort/ship have a gym?”
If one of your legitimate top 5 concerns is whether or not your destination has a gym then you need therapy. I'm sorry, that was ugly. But let's get serious here. The entire point of a vacation is get away from stress and everyday life. Believe me, I understand the gym or a long run being a place of escape. I PROMISE I get it. In my everyday life, I look forward to going to the Box to lift or going for a long run on a Saturday morning.
However, when I go on vacation, a gym is not one of my top five concerns. Why? Because I know that when I give my body 4-7 days to fully recover (hint- that's another “R”) from daily stresses plus the hard workouts I put her through; I KNOW that she will come back stronger. More is not always better, girls. Sometimes less really is more. Give your body room to breathe and give her a dang break for Pete's sake.
That said, switch up your priorities. Going to the beach? Amazing, here are questions I ask 1. “Is our condo on the beach?” 2. “Do they have a grill so we can cook outdoors?” 3. “How quiet on average is it?”. See where I'm going with this? Focus on restoring your body. You work hard! It's time you give yourself credit for working so hard and loosen up while on vacation.
You Order Vodka and Water
Seriously? Vodka and water? Yes, I am looking at you, madam ordering vodka and water with a twist. Don't tell me you think it tastes good because you're lying to yourself and you've convinced yourself it does. I'm saying this with all the love in my heart, but you have got to calm down, sister and lighten up.
Now, I personally am not an alcohol connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination but I do know that you can have some tasty drinks without there
being 500+ calories in your glass. Which, if you decide to have one or two of those while you're gone, that's up to you! Remember point one? Follow my bouncing ball here… Don't go to one extreme or the other, find the middle and balance yourself.
Here- I'll even help you out, click here when you're done reading this post to head over to Habits of a Modern Hippie where she will give you an awesome drink recipe that she eloquently calls “Downward Facing Dog”. No more Vodka and water for you! 🙂
Small side note- if you choose to drink, please please drink responsibly, I have personally seen the effects of when folks are irresponsible while drinking and they can be devastating. <3
You Judge Everyone in Their Swimwear
Alright. Touchy subject but we're going to tackle it, here we go. Everyone is a different shape and size and not all of us look like magazine covers. Actually, let me rephrase that, none of us look like that, that's call airbrushing. We go to the beach to have a good time and relax (see points one and two if you need a reminder 🙂 )
I am by no means condoning unhealthy body sizes and unhealthy living. Remember my bouncing ball? Keep following it. It's like on those sing along videos we had when we were kids. My thoughts are that ball, so keep following it..
Here's what I am saying, girls. Your stomach does not have to be concave to be healthy, your healthy and strong looks different than another girl's healthy and strong. If you see a girl on the beach and she maybe a little overweight and she's getting out there in a swimsuit, don't point and make fun. Keep your thoughts and opinions to yourself. You have no idea what she's going through. She may have a health problem she's desperately trying to fix. OR she's had an eating disorder she's recovering from and learning the healthy lifestyle balance. You have no idea the road some people are asked to walk. Be kind. She may desperately need a friend. And if you're the one making fun, you need a gut check and look at your own heart. We need more kindness in this world. Be the kindness you want to see.
Summing it up….
Taking vacations or time away from everyday is so important. You girls know how hard I push in the gym and if you're one of my clients, you know how hard I push you in your programs! (Click here to head to the training shop for instant downloads or a custom plan!) I'm also a huge proponent of rest days and taking time away once or twice a year. Completely recharging your batteries and re-evaluating your life at home making sure that there is a good balance.
At the very beginning of the year I wrote a post on how to create goals which you can read here, if you need help getting started.
Remember! Lighten up, sister. Your body will thank you for it.
