First CrossFit Competition? Who am I exactly? Oh yeah. Competitive. Sometimes too competitive for my own good, but that’s another story…
By the way- most of the pictures in the post today are taken from a phone in a room that has gym lighting, so don’t judge, mmmmkay?
Anyway! I decided this past weekend to take my level of crazy to an entirely new level and do a Crossfit competition. I mean.. What?
Before we go any further, I’ll lay out for you how this article is going to go and then we’ll get started. First, I’m going to tell you about the actual competition, then we will go right into the moral of the story, which to be honest with you, is pretty straight forward and short. Just call me Dr. Suess because this nutty story has a point.
Battle of the Box in a Nutshell
When one of the coaches at our box didn’t have a teammate for the competition that was being held at our box this past Saturday I offered up my limited services. We signed up, strategized, came up with our team name and everything; which by the way our team name was Big Butts and Coconuts. Don’t judge, y’all that’s an amazing name. Oh-kay? Besides, I had an Iron Lady for my teammate which means we had to make a statement with our team name.
Heat 1 – Clean Ladder
Thankfully this past Saturday wasn’t too terribly cold so we didn’t have a super hard time staying warm between heats. Round one was a clean ladder starting at 75lb moving all the way up to 175lb. We warmed up, got our lifting belts on (which by the way, if you need a good lifting belt, mine is from Iron Bull and you can grab it on Amazon by clicking here) and we’re standing in line waiting for the first heat to start. Did I mention I’m so nervous I’m about to throw up? Yep. I’m ridiculous. Before every single game in high school waiting to go out, I was a nervous wreck and would pee like twelve times. TMI? Oh well, what you see is what you get around here, sis.
I’m super competitive and I always have been. I’m mostly competitive with myself and that has gotten me in trouble more times than one. Yes, I like to win, but I love seeing other people win too, it legitimately makes me happy. The competitiveness is mainly with myself especially when I know I can do better.
So, long story short, I hit each clean up to 105. I pulled the 115 and couldn’t get it flipped even after 3 tries. To say I was disappointed is an understatement, however, once I got to thinking about it, I was super proud of that 105, because I’d done only 65 in a WOD, so I actually got a PR with the 105! By the way, did I mention Sydney (my teammate) is an iron lady? Legit, y’all. She yanked that 165 and stood up under it like “yeah, I did that” because she totally did. (~~> Meet Sydney, ya’ll)
Heat 2- Deadlift Ladder & Synchronized Bar Facing Burpees
After a rest and our volunteers getting the next round set up, we lined up for the deadlift ladder and synchronized bar facing burpees. As if burpees aren’t stupid enough, Sydney and I have to be on the ground at the same time and jump over the bar at the same time. It cannot be a step hop thing, it has to be two feet leave the ground and two feet land on the ground on the other side of the bar, at the same time. How we only got no repped (meaning have to re-do) twice, only Jesus himself knows.
10 Min cap on this heat and Sydney and I are cruising through these reps and burpees. I was able to do a pull on the 125 but she carried us the rest of the way. I kept holding my breath during the burpees because I was trying to make sure we were synchronized which, surprise, made me go out of breath faster. Go figure! Who would have ever thought to not hold your breath while doing burpees.
Anyway! Moving on.
Heat 3 – 15 Minute Partner Relay AMRAP
I’m not going to list everything out but basically you and your teammate switch off doing 3 different exercises for 4 rounds for 15 minutes. Part of one of my rounds was a snatch with 55lb. Which, in the Crossfit world, really isn’t that heavy. But in Amber world, that is heavy for a snatch. Here’s why, I have been a runner for years and my lower body is strong. My upper body however… I have always struggled, and for quite some time I neglected it. Not a good idea by the way.
Remember in heat one I was so nervous I thought I was going to throw up? Yeah, this heat was worse. I was shaking I was so nervous because 1. I didn’t want to let Sydney down because I know my snatches are not strong and 2. remember the competitive thing we talked about earlier? Yep.
Sydney finishes round one and tags me for my turn. I got through my 30 Wall Balls and 20 hanging knees to chest no problem. Here come the snatches. Blek. Chalk the hands…. probably chalked more than necessary but oh well, that means my hands were more than ready. Ya’ll, my heart is racing just thinking about it. Isn’t that ridiculous? Anyway, focus… I fought and fought through those snatches, one at a time. Ended up having to clean it, then jerk it overhead to do an overhead squat on the last several by the graciousness of the judge.
Over all? We finished third. Can you believe it? How’s that for exciting!?
Now it’s time to play Dr. Suess and give you a moral to the story.
Two Things I Learned that You Can Apply Too
I’m stronger than I realized and guess what? You’re stronger than YOU realize, sister. Believe it or not, like it or not, we have the opportunity to continue to grow for our entire lives. We may physically stop growing between 18-25 but we can continue to grow spiritually and mentally for our entire lives if we allow ourselves to.
How? For starters, you have to keep challenging yourself. Do things that scare you, get off the sidelines and get into the game. This competition this past weekend was WAY out of my comfort zone. I’ve run races, played ball games, made All-State titles, but this competition was out of the comfort zone. I’m talking way out there in left field. I played sports growing up, why would this be any different? Because, I was really good at the sports I played growing up and I’m still what you’d call a newbie to Crossfit and I’m not as strong as the other girls in the Box. You know what though? None of them could have ever been more encouraging.
Surround yourself with uplifting people. While I was struggling through those snatches, Brittany my judge, was coaching me, encouraging me. (You can see her talking to me up there in that picture) Plus, Sydney was back behind the relay line encouraging me, I had Sarah one of my closest friends who was on another team hollering at me, pushing me forward. If you’re around people that make you feel bad about yourself, or following people on social media that make you feel bad about yourself, it’s time to move on, sister. There you have it, ladies. My first Crossfit competition is in the books and I’m sure there will be more where that came from. Whatever you’re going through right now; keep your chin up, your coffee strong, and look the world right in the face.
